Spinal Cord Injuries
Have you or a loved one suffered a spinal cord injury? The experienced attorneys of Grossman Law Offices can help.

The spinal cord is the bundle of nerves that runs from the brain down to the lower back area. Despite the protective layer of bones in the spine, the spinal cord is a relatively fragile portion of the body that when damaged can have devastating affects. The extent of the damage is related to the region of the spinal cord that is damaged.
The nerves extend from the brain stem and run to the various limbs. If you start at the top of the spinal cord, you will find the largest quantity of nerves running along side one another. As you go further down the spine, the nerves that control one bodily function or another branch off and go to the limb or organ that they control.
So How do Insurance Adjusters Work? How Can They Get Away With Treating me Unfairly?
As most people are aware, the less money an insurance company pays out, the more money they make. Federal and state regulations set strict rules regarding many of the business practices that an insurance company must abide by. Unfortunately, much of the claims process is open to interpretation by the insurance companies themselves. This results in their own set of parameters determining whether or not they pay you a fair amount or anything at all.
Whenever you are involved in an accident, the insurance adjuster assigned to the case is tasked with building a case against you using any methods at their disposal. The entire purpose of their job is to save their company as much money as they can. There is no such thing as “innocent until proven guilty” in the insurance world. Instead, you are assumed to be at fault until the adjuster is convinced otherwise.
If a spinal cord injury occurs at toward the bottom to mid section of the spine, only the nerves that control the legs and other lower body components are present in that part of the cord and the damage is isolated to the loss of lower mobility and leg function. This is known as paraplegia. The higher up the spine that the injury occurs, the more nerves there are in that part of the spine, thus the more parts of the body that are affected by the damage. Damage to the top of the spinal cord (neck injury) can result in quadriplegia.

Most spinal cord injuries are permanent. It is absolutely imperative for the victim of a spinal cord injury to partner with a Houston PI lawyer (personal injury attorney) that has experience in representing clients with similar injuries. With an injury so severe, the attorney must posses the ability to fully calculate and quantify the pain all of the victim's damages, particularly in terms of long-term health care. In other words, someone who has suffered a spinal cord injury may have $500,000 in medical expenses. Our Texas personal injury attorneys know that the medical expenses don't stop there and we fight to ensure that our clients' future medical expenses are compensated for to provide them with the means of paying for long-term care such as an attendant or nurse to help them with daily activities, counseling services to help them cope with the long-term emotional and psychological impact of losing the ability to walk, transportation to and from treatments, etc.
Some of Our Most Recent Successful Cases
$350,000.00 Recovery - Premises Liability (Brain Injury)
Our attorneys sued an apartment complex in relation to a brain injury sustained by a toddler when he fell through a balcony railing. The apartment complex denied liability, asserted that their railings were in spec at the time of the building's construction (some 20 years prior), and they claimed that the child's mother was contributorily negligent in that she did not notice that her child was playing near the railing.
Through litigation, our attorneys countered the defendant's arguments by showing that the case law does not support the notion of any safety related concerns in the building code being "grandfathered" in. On the contrary, a property owner has an obligation to keep safety features such as balcony railings within the specs at all times. The railings in this complex were spaced at 7 inch intervals, which was at odds with the now-standard 4 inch interval.
Additionally, our attorneys countered the claims of contributory negligence as a practical matter in that the mother was indeed monitoring the child's activity and the child literally ran up to the railing and immediately fell through the rails. Alternatively, we argued that the doctrine of parental immunity applied and that the contributory negligence, if any such negligence ever even occurred, of the mother would not be admissible. The case was satisfactorily resolved through litigation.

$350,000.00 Recovery - Product Liability (Back Injury Resulting in Surgery)
A young woman suffered a back injury that required corrective surgery following a boating accident. The boat in question sped out of control and crashed into a landmass, throwing our client from the boat, as the result of a stuck throttle. Upon inspection of the boat, it was determined that a poor design led to the malfunction and a product liability lawsuit was brought against the manufacturer. The defendants argued that the boat was inappropriately piloted, however, the physical evidence depicted the cause of the accident quite clearly and the case was successfully resolved.
